The question we are trying to answer is: how can educational institutions prepare young people to start working?
Are the academic programs aligned with what companies are looking for?
These are the questions that need to be answered, especially today, when new technologies like Internet of Things and big data are changing any industry.
A data driven approach can help you to make strategic decision despite the uncertain scenarios.
WollyBI for Education and Research for the University of Padua
Dr. Gilda Rota, Career Service Director of the University of Padua, presented on 24th October at the ESCO Conference in Rome, how to use big data to help the students enter the job market.
Thanks to research conduct by the Data Scientist of WollyBI, it has been possible to develop an online tool that allows analyzing information of great interest.
Starting from the analysis of the degree courses, the tool has extracted the occupations coming out of the course itself. These data have been cross-referenced with the WollyBI’ database, which contains million of job vacancies, to obtain an exhaustive overview of the labour market demand.
Universities and job opportunities: a real case
For example, the tool developed by the WollyBI’ data scientist team has highlighted the correspondence between the Business Administrator degree course proposed by the University of Padua and the skills requested by the companies within certain geographies.
How many job offers were posted on the web where the job description contained qualifications in line with the skills acquired by the students during their degree course?
The most requested professions by companies as part of the Business Administration degree course
In 2018, 5.497 job vacancies related to the degree course in Business Administration were published in Italy, which according to the ESCO classification coincide with the role of Financial Analyst and Economists, among which the figure of Junior Economist emerges.
The results can also be associated with the classification of occupations provided by the ISTAT Code, and in this group, the Specialists in management and control of private companies are sought 86.1% of cases.
The research also reveals that the young people are the first choice for the companies and this can be observed from the level of experience required (none for 42% of cases) and from the type of contract offered, the apprenticeship in 36.5% of cases.
Each working position has a different mix of Soft Skills, Digital Skills and No Digital Skills. An example? The young graduate in Business Economics from the University of Padua, who will assume the role of Investment Analyst, should have a mix of the following skills: 41% No Digital Skills, 40% Soft Skills, 17% Digital Skills.
It is possible to contextualize even more the results of the research by limiting the results at the territorial level: regional, provincial and municipal. In one specific Region, for instance, in 2018, 637 job offers were advertised, in alignment with the degree course in Business Economics, in which 72% of the time the young economist was the most requested candidate.
